Another look at pendulum tuned mass dampers
Last modified: 2017-05-18
Abstract
Tuned mass damper have been proposed almost hundred years ago and found its application in a number of areas. Pendulum tuned mass dampers have been studied less extensively due to the obvious fact - its nonlinear behavior at large amplitudes.
In this paper the idea of a pendulum tuned mass damper is revisited by studying its application to another pendulum. As a result a two degree-of-freedom system comprising two pendulums is studied analytically, in the case of small vibrations, and numerically for two different types of excitations: external and internal.
The study shows that the behavior of the system with pendulum tuned mass damper is different from the mass-spring system with mass-spring damper.
